Due to impending inclement weather and cloudy skies at Curby this Saturday night, July 6 at 6:00 PM, Ronnie Yates, Frank Kennedy and I have decided to move the LAS Family Picnic to the Urban Astronomy Center on this Saturday July 6 with a later starting time of 7:00 PM .

If you have rsvp'd,  you do not have to do

so again. The LAS will provide hamburgers and hot dogs, fixings, soft drinks and water.

Side dishes will still be needed. We will be showing excerpts from the Apollo 11 documentary on a Bluray player.

Both the disc and the player were generously donated to the LAS by Curby director Ronnie Yates. Thanks, Ronnie!

Please do not let this short notice deter you from attending this picnic. We want to meet you and introduce you to what we have to offer.

If you can attend, please RSVP to LAS President Ken Alderson at megacoach@aol.com. Any questions? Call Ken at 502-939-0324.

As promised, I would call a go, no go for member night at Curby on Saturday.  Conditions for tomorrow (June 1) have not improved, while they appear to be good for tonight (May 31). As such, I am rescheduling member night for tonight, starting at 8:00 PM. If you have a solar scope and wish to do solar observing, you are welcome to come earlier. This event is for members and their guests only. You can find directions to Curby on our web site if you need them.

Good evening. Checking on weather conditions this weekend, it appears that Saturday may be too cloudy and possibly rainy for our planned member night events. I will give a go, no go on Saturday's Member night by Noon tomorrow, but it is not looking good.

Having said that, I know the membership is as frustrated as I am with these weather conditions. Fortunately, conditions look favorable for viewing tomorrow night, Friday, May 31. If enough members express to me that they are in favor of getting together tomorrow night at Curby, I will open up the facility at 8:00 PM for an impromptu member night. Let me know via Facebook PM or on our forums on this web site if you are interested in opening up Curby for member viewing tomorrow night, May 31, 2019 at 8:00 PM.

I hate being the bearer of bad news, but for the third event in a row it looks like we are going to be rained out for Public night at Curby on May 11, 2019.  Blame the meteorologists, or at least anyone who bought new equipment recently.  It seems we  can't get a break.  Sorry, folks.  Public night is cancelled.

Tomorrow's forecast calls for 100% chance of rain, and 60% chance tomorrow night.  With all the rain we've had already and 0 chance of clear skies tomorrow might, member night tomorrow, May 4, 2019 at Curby is canceled.

Weather on Friday and Saturday is trending from bad to worse to just not good at all.  I am calling both the Oaks night and Derby night events off.

Let's hope for a great weather outlook next year when we have the moon and Venus in the sky!

Here is a status update for tomorrow's public night at Curby. All three clear sky web sites I use to determine sky conditions for our events indicate that tomorrow (April 13) will be completely overcast during the scheduled time for our event. In addition, the National Weather Service is forecasting rain starting in the mid-evening time frame and lasting most of the night. On top of that the observing field will likely be saturated and very soft. As such, public observing... at Curby for tomorrow night, April 13, is cancelled.

Having said that, because the event has been advertized locally, and because there are always some who don't get the message, I will be there tomorrow evening until I am sure either no one will be there or to meet and greet those who do show up. As such, if you have not seen the facility and would like a guided tour, I will be there from 7:00 P.M. until 10:00 P.M.

Various clear sky charts are giving conflicting data for conditions However, It may be possible that the skies will clear enough to hold our member night at Curby. So I am going to call a go for member night, tomorrow at 8:00 P.M. Come earlier if you want to. If you are a new member, it will be a good time to see our facility and meet other members. If you have a new scope, or one that you are having problems with, other members can help. Directions to Curby can be found at the link below. See you there.
