Tom Empson and John Turack represented the LAS at La Higuera, Chile for the July 2, 2019 total solar eclipse. They braved mind numbing long flights, hotel staff politely losing their passports and freezing temperatures of the Andes to bring you this report. Of course, what would a report be like if you don't have pictures. They have been sworn to keep the number of pictures under 1,000! If they DON"T they will be the newest additions to the telescope counterweight collection at the Curby Observatory! So come out and see what this solar eclipse revealed about the Sun's corona. There will also be a few views of that area of the world. Ever hear of a place called Rapa Nui?? Looking forward to seeing you there and providing some views and some answers to questions!!
Directions to the UAC are on the LAS website.
Members may arrive early for set-up. If the ground is wet, we will set-up behind the building on the asphalt. Scope set-up is weather dependent. Our scopes are unable to penetrate the clouds and heavy moisture such as rain drops are bad for the electronics.
Map to UAC
We would like to invite members and all interested astronomy buffs to our LAS Holiday UAC Open House, Public Night and Equipment Sale. We will be serving cookies, hot chocolate, spiced cider and soft drinks.
The LAS Urban Astronomy Center is in the Root Cellar Building at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. The UAC is a 2,000 square foot heated classroom and meeting space plus storage for our telescopes. It features a kitchen, restroom and a four acre observing field in front of the building. A perfect place for you to learn how to use your scope or talk astronomy with the old guys.
Directions to the UAC can be found here.
